Last week, 13 middle school bands performed at Farmington High School while participating in the Farmington Music Department’s second annual Middle School Band Festival.

Throughout the day, middle school bands from around Minnesota gathered at FHS and performed two to three pieces to showcase their musical talent. Afterwards they worked with two clinicians, Professor James Patrick Miller from Gustavus Adolphus College and Professor Elizabeth McCann from the University of Minnesota. Each professor taught students different techniques to improve their musicianship and encouraged them to keep working. The festival allows students to perform in a space outside of their own school in a non-competitive atmosphere and receive expert advice. While these festivals are common at the high school level, this middle school festival is something new to the Farmington community.

Both Boeckman Middle School and Dodge Middle School made an appearance at the festival. Each school’s 8th grade band performed allowing those students to experience the school and stage they will be playing on next year.

Paige Huling, a BMS 8th grade Bari Sax player, said, “It was fun to play our music and then learn what we needed to work on.”
