On Friday, April 20th and Friday, April 27, 1st (and some 2nd) graders at Farmington Elementary, Meadowview Elementary, North Trail Elementary, and Akin Road Elementary invited their grandparents to attend their annual Grand Day event. Grandparents and special guests were greeted with a music program where students sang, danced, and played instruments to entertain and honor their family in the audience. After, students showed their special guests their school and different projects they had been working on.

Students spent a lot of time in class making invitations for their guests, as well as different projects and poems to show them. Writing these also helped the students improve different literary techniques such as descriptive language. They revised and rewrote their poems to ensure they wrote them perfectly.

At Akin Road, Ms. Shelby Ferry directed the children through their musical numbers as they sang about their love for their grandparents, the country, and pizza. Every student was given a special role in the performance whether singing, speaking, or holding props. After songs of love and laughter, the students filled the gym with one big dance to finish the show. Some grandparents said the performance, “brought tears to their eyes,” explained Ms. Katie Flahaven, 1st grade teacher at Akin Road. “One grandparent mentioned how they felt their grandchild had given to them more in their life than they could equally give back.”

Students were excited and nervous to show off their learning to their special guests. After the event, however, one student commented it was “the best day ever!” Another thanked her teacher “for such a fun day.”

This event happens every spring for 1st and some 2nd grade students in the district. 2nd graders who participate in the event are part of multiage classrooms that encompass both 1st and 2nd graders.
Riverview Elementary will also be holding Grand Day activities on Friday, May 18th.
